So at the start of the year a thread was started to encourage people to list their goals and progress.
So seeing as its now the end of the year i thought i would share how my year went.
My initial goal was just to train towards my black belt grading.

So i've now graded to black belt and i was very happy with how i felt throughout the grading.
I've also improved my full contact sparring although it still needs alot of work on finding the correct angles. Maybe Freddie Roach can coach me Razz

My goals over the next 12 months are to continue with my full contact training.
Im off to Brazil in Feb for BJJ training and then up to canada for an extended period of time where i'll be training at MMA gyms.

Im very excited to see how i progress as a martial artist through-out my travels Smile

Did anyone else achieve the goals they set at the start of the year???

Congratulations Adam - you seem to be growing and improving in leaps and bounds - well done - and you have such interesting times ahead.

My stated goals were to be able to do the splits and to work on the techniques I learnt from Master Yoon in Korea.

I am not able to do the splits - but I must say that just having that goal has meant I have stretched more and I can see an improvement in my flexibility over the last 12 months - maybe the splits will happen next year.

As for the techniques Master Yoon taught me I have been working on them as part of my Friday classes - most classes I have picked one of the techniques and worked on it with the students during the class. The next level will be to look through his demo videos and based on what I learnt off him - work out how to do the techniques in his demo.

For next year I would like to re-visit some of the Myung Jae Nam videos I have downloaded and try to learn some of his techniques - I really like the way he flows and uses changing radii to throw his attacker.

So in short - not all goals achieved - but I improved in trying.

Daniel

My goals were to fix up my kicks and to figure out how to use hapkido in full contact sparring type situations i.e offensively

Well I'm glad to say my kicks got a lot better but with the rest of hapkido I think maybe I did too much crosstraining this year so it started to resemble a mix of hapkido and bjj.

Certainly I figured out how to be more offensive with the techniques and while still effective my self defense reverted back to brute force a little bit and I developed a habit of taking everything to the ground. I guess in short my hapkido became less fluid and more attribute based.

Goal for next year is to strip everything right back to basics again maybe if I ask nice and work hard I can get promoted back to white belt Laughing

Hi AC good topic!

I think that my major goal for the year has been to recover from injuries and get back into martial arts. The injury count for the year has been, broken shoulder, fractured wrist, and broken hand on the other side. Currently only dislocated finger so i am pretty much right! So having come from being in hospital i am now able to say i am in trainning!! and loving it Very Happy

My training goals have many been around striking and kicking. building the arms back up to 100% and getting the legs kicking better than they have been before. This is gone well and i think i have made some good progress here. I think that i will continue with this and really work on the flexibility and being loose. Also getting a greater understanding of Hapkido & its application.

Have a good trip to Brasil. Which city are you going to? In spent a bit of time over there and it was great. Sao Paulo is good but i found it better on the coast so that you can go to the beach when you are not training

Oh you've been? COOL!!!

Well im kinda gonna be all around the place. First off i'll be in Rio and then i go to a city called Juiz de Fora which is where i'll be doing BJJ with Brazilian Top Team.
After that im doing some more travelling around and then back to Juiz de Fora for more BJJ and then to Sao Paulo for a while before flying up to Canada.

Cant wait to see how much i've improved by the time i get back to Australia Smile

be very very careful. A mate got back from 2 weeks there not long ago. Got mugged 3 times in the first 2 days. Apparently if you look like you have a bit of cash i.e are wearing nice clothes and are by yourself you can be almost certain that someone will stick a gun in your back.

Also be careful of whats known as "express kidnappings" which is where they take you to an atm and demand you take out all your cash then they wish you the best and are on their way to the next gringo

Common sense is the only thing yah need to take with you!

However a couple of other points to consider. Brasil has a large population, so you need to treat the big citys like any other big city and not act like you are there to hand out money to anyone that wants it. Also there are plenty of people with allot less money than you so you need to factor this in when dealing with people.

My best tips...

I would never wear a watch when i went out.
I would dress in shorts and a T-shirt most of the time.
Try to not take a bag with you. Or small bum bag for small camera
Take a small amount of money on you (only what you need) & have a spare $10 buck tied into the draw string of you shorts or in your shoe.
Dont look like you are a tourist.
learn to speak as much Portuguese as you can.

Having said all that i remember one time i was walking home through a really poor slum, late at night and totally shitting myself because it was the kind of area you would be robbed for $5 and in the dirt infront of me i found a $50 note!!!

Natália Guimarães is from Juiz de Fora so that means that it must be a great place to visit!!!
