I just got back from Melbourne and had quite an interesting experience....

My girlfriend my brother and myself were cornered on a moving tram and attacked by 10 - 15 males with an attitude problem....

I was pretty happy with how i handled the situation considering and i was happy to see that after all these year of training i didnt freeze under the pressure and i was able to keep a clear mind while having 10 fists fly at my face Razz

Long story short all 3 of us are ok although my brother got a bit of a bloody face.
I wish i got the chance to fight back against these punks but thats not what self defence is about. For me the most important thing was protecting my girlfriend and she escaped unhurt so mission successful in my books Smile

Glad to hear you're ok!

Could you work out any reason why they targeted you? What techniques were you able to use? How do you think learning Hapkido influenced your response?

Paul

They targeted us because they were drunk morons!!!!

The only technique i could use was a knee to the head of one of them but the rest of the time i was backed into a corner with about 12 guys coming at me so all i could do was cover.

Im not sure how HapKiDo specificlly helped me but just my various training in general allowed me to stay calm and protect myself. Although i still got hit in the head about 7 times Razz

That sucks! i hope everyone is ok.

I guess it is difficult in situations like that to know when to call the police as it all happens pretty quick.

It got me thinking what are the most common situations that i would likely face when attacked?

I found this on the fightingarts forum posted in dec 2006 so i am not sure how current it is. Any thoughts?

[i]below are the accepted top 10 acts of violence in the UK, taken from police figures (male on male). There are a load of notes that go with it, but I am just going to list them and put a short summary after,

Hope it is of help with anyone looking to have a good realistic self defence aspect to their art -

1. attacker pushes, defender pushes back, attacker throws a swinging punch to the head

2. a swinging punch to the head

3. a front clothing grab, one handed, followed by punch to head

4. 2 handed front clothing grab, followed by headbutt

5. 2 handed front clothing grab followed by knee to groin

6. bottle, glass or ashtray to the head, swinging

7. a lashing kick to groin/lower legs

8. a bottle,glass jabbed to face

9. a slash with a knife, usually 3-4 inch lockblade or kitchen knife

10. a grappling style headlock

most of our self defence training should be against a swinging punch to the head, the top 2 spots.

85% of people lead with a right handed punch, train accordingly.

3,4,5 are grabs, you got your distance wrong, ignore grab and attack.

6,8,9 are weapons, 3/10 top attacks are with weapons - shocking reality.

7. against a kick angle in or out to attack, do not go back or the following punch will get you

10. headlock, back or side is very common if the initial attack fails.

Yeah the first one is pretty much how it started. He pushed me while i was sitting down and then i stood up and he instantly threw a right hook/haymaker.
Unfortunatley due to being a little intoxicated myself *cough drinking for the previous 8 hours *cough i didn't block the punch as i didnt see it coming Sad
