News Item: Hapkido Demo Team - calling all Black Belts

Black Belt TrainingOne of the suggestions arising from the last Black Belt Conference was to establish a Hapkido Demo Team that would be available for demos anywhere, anytime.

Master Brown was asked to be the Coach for the Hapkido Demo Team and is asking for volunteer Black Belts to be trained up to be able to participate in our demos.

There would be about 6 core routines that would need to be learnt and perfected and then individuals would be asked to come up with their own routines for demos. In this way we would have a pool of black belts we can call on to do a demo at short notice.

Members of the Demo Team would receive free demo training with Master Brown once a month (one hour of training before each monthly Black Belt class at Brookvale).

Anyone interested in being a member of the Hapkido Demo Team should attend the first demo training session:
  • Sunday 2nd August 2009 - 2pm-3pm - Brookvale Dojang
Any Black Belt can try out for the team - Master Brown will decide if you have what it takes to be part of the team. Want to give something back to your art? Want to stretch yourself and see how good you can be? Then come along to the demo training. if you have a routine you would like to show Master Brown - then bring whatever/whoever you need to the training.

For now the demo training is only open to Black Belts.

News Item: Grandmaster Kim and Master Brown award 5th Degree to Master Scott Wetherall

Announcements
Dear members of the AHA,

As you are aware, a senior member of the Association, Bondi club Instructor and our very dear friend, Scott Wetherell passed away on the 30th May 2009. I’ve been over whelmed by the amount of touching tributes that have been posted on our website.

Scott made a huge impact on many people during his short life with his awesome ability, his inspirational teaching and his dedication and unyielding support of the AHA. Outside of Hapkido his friendship and support for many friends and associates were just as important to him and this was apparent by the hundreds of family, friends and AHA members that attended the funeral.

At the service I had the opportunity to speak, not only on behalf of the AHA but also as a very close friend of Scott. His support for me throughout the years in both Hapkido and my personal life was tremendous and will never be forgotten.

Scott was a member of the AHA for 25 years and graded to 4th Degree in 1999. He was due to grade in 2007 for his 5th Degree but was unable to grade because of injury. When I contacted Grandmaster Kim of Scott’s untimely death, he was shocked and saddened.

Grandmaster Kim asked me, “what can we do”? I mentioned how I intended to have Scott grade this year for his 5th Degree. Grandmaster Kim said, “then lets honour him with a 5th Degree”.

We both could not think of anyone more deserving than Scott, he devoted his life to Hapkido and our Association. He inspired generations of Black Belts and students and played a huge role in the ongoing development of our curriculum.

So it is only fitting that I inform all members of the AHA, that Scott will now and forever be recognised as Master Scott Wetherell, 5th Degree.

Melbourne Grading - report from Master Brown

GradingsThe students performed very well and I was very happy with their progress.

Instructor, Andrew Brownrigg is doing a great job, considering the distance from other clubs and senior members.

The club has a very friendly atmosphere and they would love to have other Instructors or students drop in if they are visiting Melbourne.

News Item: Mannering Park Training Time and Day Change

Club NewsHunter Mannering Park club has changed their training times and day. From Monday 11/05/2009 there will be no Monday night classes until further notice.

Classes will now be conducted only of a Wednesday evening starting from 13/05/2009. Class times will be 6pm to 8pm and will be a mixed class.

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, the above solution was put into place to try and keep the club operating.

Tup Moekaa will be teaching back at the Mannering Park club from the above day/date. Thanks goes to students and their families for their continued support as well as Alex Blias for valiantly upholding the teachings as passed onto him from his instructors.

It is hoped that in the near future that the club can go back to providing two (2) training sessions a week. Until then -- Wednesdays is your renewed chance to learn from Tup Moekaa.

New batch of Level 1 Instructors Graduated in Sep 2008

SyllabusIn September 2008 the AHA delivered the Instructor Course to 37 participants - for some of them this was the first one they attended. We have been delivering instructor courses since 1992 and have put 111 instructors through Level Certification in this time - with many having gone through several times. The accreditation is only valid for 3 years and must be accompanied by a valid First Aid Certificate.

A course was run on Norfolk Island as well by Tup Moekaa and Master Brown will be running the course in Northern NSW in Nov 08. This course is aimed at keeping all our instructors up to date with the latest techniques and concentrates on how to teach Hapkido safely to minimise injury to all.
