News Item: Workshops in Byron Bay last weekend with Master Brown

Club NewsHapkido Students from as far south as Port Macquarie and as far North as Brisbane enjoyed a 4 hr. (yes 4hrs. weren’t we lucky) session with Master Brown last weekend in Byron Bay.

The session saw Master Brown return to this beautiful part of Australia and the weather and the Hapkido spirit shone every minute of the afternoon and well into the evening. Master Brown set the usual high standard of energy and students participated in a great warm up, belt level kicking combinations, sparring techniques, and self defence.

In true North Coast Spirit the session was completed outside with a pole and sword session for
Black Belts and kicking for coloured belts. The 4 hrs. gave us a chance to be inspired by new combinations, new take down and falling routines whilst allowing higher levels to revisit techniques, deepening our understanding of basics and further locking in more advanced techniques.

Training with new students and seeing familiar faces is always wonderful and every student left truly inspired. A big thank you to Master Brown and Di for taking the time to visit and instruct and a big thank you to Eli for making the day happen.

We look forward to seeing you all September 21st-23rd at the AHA spring Camp at Lake Ainsworth (20min south of Byron Bay).

Stay tuned for more details shortly

Warm regards Justine Lobb, Australian Hapkido Association

News Item: By popular demand - Art In Motion by Master Scott Wetherell

AnnouncementsMany people who saw the Art In Motion video at the last camp have asked if it could be shared on the web sit so everyone could see the amazing demos and fine examples of good Hapkido.

Below is a link to the video in Youtube (click on the image), enjoy. This video was compiled about 15 years ago by Master Scott Wetherell as a promotional video he handed out to new students when they joined the Kirrawee full time Hapkido dojang. Great work by a dedicated Hapkido student - we all miss him greatly. The video runs for about 15 minutes.

News Item: Who is going for their next degree in 2012? - it's a team effort!!

Gradings
The following people have registered their intention to attempt to grade for their next Black Belt Degree in 2012. The journey of a black belt can be quite lonely and there is a long way between goals. So if one of these people is in your club then why not take an interest in their progress, Ask them how they are preparing, maybe even offer your time and encouragement to help them prepare.

It takes the whole club to make a good black belt - not just the instructor and the student - so don't just sit back and watch - be part of their success.

Minimum Time between gradings for Black Belts

Black belt techniques are usually more difficult than the coloured belt techniques and require a lot of time to get right. The following times are guidelines only and indicate how much time is normally taken to learn and perfect the techniques of each grade. It is common for black belts to take 10 years or longer to achieve their 4th Degree Black Belt.
  • 1st Degree to 2nd Degree – 2 years of training
  • 2nd Degree to 3rd Degree – 3 years of training
  • 3rd Degree to 4th Degree – 4 years of training
  • 4th Degree to 5th Degree - 5 years of training, etc...
This year there will be two Black Belt Gradings:
  1. Northern NSW Spring Camp - 21-23 Sep 2012
  2. Sydney Black Belt Grading - Pittwater - Sat 17 Nov 2012 - 1:30pm
Good luck to all pre-graders - train hard - fight easy!!

News Item: Relay for Life (Cancer Council) - fantastic result from Terry Turner

Club NewsOur Terry Turner (Black Belt from Northern NSW Hapkido) participated in the Relay for Life to raise money for the Cancer Council. The event was held on the 10-11th March 2012. Terry's team (Far North Coast Rural Fire Service) had to have one member walking at all times during the event.

The Tweed Valley effort raised $58,000.00. The RFS Team (Terry's team) raised $3,507.00 (some money to be registered yet). Terry (pictured below in uniform) won the award for the most enthusiastic walker. Terry walked the most and looked the “prettiest”.

Terry personally raised $688.00. Terry's team won the team effort on the relay, as they had someone on the track for the entire event.

Well done to Terry Turner on a huge effort and a great result!

News Item: Relay for Life (Cancer Council)

Social EventsI am walking in this event in our area on the 10th March to the 11th March 2012.

Our team, (Far North Coast Rural Fire Service) must have one member walking at all times during the event.

If I can get $1,000 in sponsorship I will make every effort to walk as much of the 24Hrs as I can.

I have $400 in sponsorship so far, so how about helping out? It is a great cause.

My personal current goal is $500.00 but when that is reached I will up it to $1000.00 so if you want to put me in pain and work me hard, please help out the Cancer Council by sponsoring me or someone else in a local event in your area.

Cheers, Terry Turner - Northern NSW Hapkido
