Black Belt Class Sunday 14 Mar 2010 - Brookvale Empower Dojang

The next Sydney Black Belt Class is on Sunday 14 March 2010 from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at the following location:
This is a great opportunity to train with other Black Belts and to get direct tuition from Master Brown. |

 | News Item: Opening party for Brookvale Dojang was a huge success! |
 Over 200 spectators packed into the new Empower Dojang in 22 Orchard Rd Brookvale to witness and be part of the birth of a new and dynamic martial centre in the middle of Brookvale. This dojang is the new home of our Northern Beaches Hapkido Dojang.
The event started with a ceremonial cutting of the ribbon by Kumdo Master Jang followed by a spiritual cleansing by Uncle Max, an aboriginal tribal elder from the local community. A great demonstration followed and included:
- sword pattern and cutting demos by Master Jang and his student Annie,
- Taekwondo demo by Master Ron Claassens and his students
- Hapkido demo by Mater Geister and his students
- Zumba workout by Anne Mouland-Claassens.
A big thanks goes out to Tup Moekaa from Hunter Hapkido who came down to help out with the demo.
The demos went down very well with the spectators showing interest in joining the dojang and starting on their own martial arts journey. Great fun was had by all.

| News Item: Brookvale - the move to Orchard Rd |
On the 7 Feb 2010 the Brookvale dojang move their mats and sprung floor into their new dojang in Orchard Rd. This new centre stands out from other similar gyms of this genre, not just by size or what is inside the gym but with its blending of eastern feel with modern western decor. Fully equipped and matted with sprung floor, change facilities, personal training studio, and weights area, our dojang caters for beginner students through to advanced, kids and adults alike. It offers our students far more, has double the training space of our old dojang (almost 300sqm of matted, sprung flooring!), better facilities, easier parking and child drop off options.

| News Item: AHA Summer Camp at Myuna Bay - 19-21 Mar 2010 |
 The next AHA camp is being held on the 19-21 March 2010 at Myuna Bay Sports and Recreation Centre.
Just a little over an hour’s drive north of Sydney, the centre is in a perfect location for outdoor adventure and specialises in water-based activities all year round.
This is a really great location at the edge of Lake Macquarie with great facilities, accommodation and food. Put the date in your diary now!!
Prices (same as last year!!) - Full Camp (over 18) $165
- Full Camp (5 to 17) $125
- Full Camp (2 to 4) $40
- Day Only $30

Registrations closed on Thursday 5 March 2010.
The full price includes all meals and accommodation from Friday evening till Sunday 4:00pm.
The rooms are heated and have their own en-suite toilet and shower.
Bring pillow case, sleeping bag, towel & toiletries. (Pillows are supplied).
 The current plan for activities will include:
- Grading on Sat night (Colour Belts and Black Belt Pre-graders)
- Technique workshops with Master Brown
- Stretching and Meditation workshop with Master Geister
- Sparring workshop with the Mitchell Wetherell
- Walking Cane workshop with Master Geister
- Kicking workshop with Danny Turner (Sunday)
- Mixed Martial Arts workshop with Tup Moekaa
- Group training with Hapkido students from other clubs
- Party Saturday night after the grading (including a fire twirling show and dancing around the bonfire)
The camp is a great mix of training and fun that will allow you make a huge leap in your understanding of Hapkido and at the same time meet other like-minded martial artists.

| News Item: New location of Brookvale Dojang - the dawn of a new era! |
The Brookvale Dojang is relocating to a new location over the Christmas break. Classes will start in the new location on Mon 1 Feb 2010.
The new location is a few blocks away from the old dojang in Brookvale and is still in a very convenient location for public transport and parking. The new dojang will be bigger, have more space, more equipment, better facilities but will still be a great place to meet and train with all your Hapkido friends.
Here are a few photos to get you excited - more to follow as the preparations near completion.
Master Matt Geister and the Brookvale instructors are excited about the new dojang and have sent out letters to all current members of the Brookvale Dojang - in case you have missed out here is a copy of the letter.

All AHA students will of course be welcome to train at this dojang, just as they were in the old Brookvale Dojang - so after the 1st Feb 2010 why not come along and try it out.

A grading was held at Mannering Park Dojang on the 24 Oct 2009. The following grades were awarded by the grading instructor Daniel Marie - congratulations to these students and to their instructors Tup Moekaa, Mick Collins and Alex Blias.

| News Item: Master Brown's weekend in Byron |
It was that time of year again when I venture north to
Byron Bay to conduct a weekend seminar and Black Belt grading. The Byron Bay
Instructor, Shirsha Marie 4th Degree had done a great job in organising the
weekend and I really enjoyed seeing everyone again. My lovely hosts, Eli and
Amy put me up at their house and made my stay very comfortable and it was very
much appreciated.

| Glebe Dojang closed Dec-Jan - Friday Night Hapkido Outdoor Training!! |
 The training hall for Glebe Dojang is undergoing repairs during Dec 2009 and Jan 2010 and is not available for Hapkido classes. It will be full of scaffolding.
Monday and Wednesday Classes
Normal Monday and Wednesday Classes will be canceled from the 30 Nov 09 until early Feb 2010. Current plan is for classes to resume on the 8 Feb 2010 (subject to the renovations being complete).
Friday Training Nights
Friday night classes will be held at the Glebe Public School - but not in the normal training hall - we will be training outdoors on the nice lawn near the car park. We will be training there on Fri nights until the work on the hall is finished (early feb 2010). Friday training nights in the dojang will resume as normal when we can get back into the hall.
Training will commence at 6:30pm and will go for a couple of hours - no uniform required. Wear normal sports clothes and shoes. Focus will be on fitness, flexibility, target work, self defence, sparring and pole.

We have received sad news in the last week that Gerard Oliver passed away in a car wreck in Perth on the 4th October, 2009. He was 50 years old.

| Keeping the path and continuing the Journey - inaugural award |
To honour the life and memory of Master Scott Wetherell a special award has been created. This award is called "Keeping the path and continuing the Journey". It is a tribute to what was important to Scott and is going to be awarded each year to a black belt who has been loyal to Hapkido, has applied themselves diligently to their study and practice of Hapkido and who has given something to the ongoing development and growth of Hapkido.
On Sunday 18 Oct 09 the inaugural (first one) award of this trophy was conducted after the Black Belt Grading at Narabeen by Master Kevin Brown and the award was handed over to the winner by Scott's brother Mitchell Wetherell (instructor for Sutherland).

| News Item: 2009 AHA Annual General Meeting - 18 Oct 09 |

The 2009 AHA Annual General Meeting was held on Sunday 18 October 2009. A report was given by Master Kevin Brown and Melissa Rees gave a financial report. In the last 12 months the AHA has made considerable profit and expects to be giving these benefits back to its members in the coming 12 months.

Byron Bay Hapkido has organised a special weekend Seminar and Black Belt Grading that will be run entirely by Master Kevin Brown.
It will be an excellent opportunity for Hapkido students in Northern NSW to receive personal instruction and benefit from Master Brown's many years of Hapkido training and expertise.

The Melbourne AHA dojang run by Andrew Brownrigg and his students have just finished putting together a web site to promote their club and keep their students informed about what is happenning in their club. Bruce, a student of the Melbourne AHA dojang is the Webmaster.

| News Item: What a night! a treat at Bondi Junction |
Over 80 students turned up last Monday night at Bondi Junction dojang to experience a class with Grandmaster Matthew Sung Su Kim. This was a rare chance to train with the founder of our Hapkido in Australia.
Right from the very first technique it was clear this class was going to be special. Many of the older students who had trained under Grandmaster Kim in the 80's and 90's had flashbacks of their beginnings in Hapkido.
For the new students Grandmaster Kim explained the importance of concentration and focus in Hapkido.
