News Item: Black Belt Syllabus V3 is now available

Black Belt TrainingThe Black Belt Syllabus is now available on the web site. Up to now our focus has been on the coloured belts - ignoring the need for Black Belts to have clear information regarding what they are supposed to be working on. This Black Belt Syllabus addresses this neglect and sets down the requirements for each grade from 1st Degree to 4th degree.

The article "Now that you have that Black Belt" also explains what is expected of our Black Belts and makes for interesting reading for any Hapkido student - not just Black Belts.

To download a PDF version of the Black Belt Syllabus V3 click on the image below (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader):

To access the Black Belt Syllabus V3 via the web site click on the following button (it is the same button as the one at the top of this web page).

This will take you to the Syllabus page where you can access the syllabus for each belt by clicking on the icon.

Over the next few months we will add videos and images to the syllabus to help Black Belts understand what they need to be working on. This will be especially useful for our more remote clubs.

This Syllabus will be reviewed and revised over the next few months so please do not hesitate to provide feedback and suggestions via the Discussion Forum.

News Item: Membership Renewals due July 1st 2008

Announcements
 Students

Your $30 annual membership fee for the Australian Hapkido Association is due
1st July 2008
. This fee includes your sports injury insurance for the next financial year.
Students who do not renew their membership fee will not be able to train in our clubs because they are not insured and they will not be able to participate in our events (tournaments, seminars, camps, gradings, etc).

In the next few weeks your instructor will give you a form to complete and add your name to the club's temporary membership list. You can either return the form to your instructor along with the $30 payment - or you can pay the association and send the form directly to the AHA (details of how to do this are on the form).

Towards the end of July the association will send your membership cards to your instructor and they will hand them out at class. Make sure you put them in a safe place as you may be asked to bring them to gradings, etc.

Instructors

You will be receiving your Instructor Pack in the next week or so - make sure you pay the Club Membership fees promptly as your club will not be insured until this fee is received. You will also need to pay for your Instructor Membership as well ($30).

Why should I pay?

These fees are important to the association so we can maintain a healthy bank balance and undertake projects to benefit the members. These fees go towards paying for advertising, merchandise, special events, master visits from Korea, the web site, instructor courses, etc. The fee also provides for Sports Injury Insurance for students and Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance for Instructors and club owners. By pooling our resources we are able to undertake projects none of us would individually be able to do.

News Item: Good news for the Glebe Club

Club NewsGlebe Dojang has always trained on Wed and Fri nights. Last week, Dominic Salsiccia - the instructor at Glebe Dojang - was told Mon nights are now available for our Glebe Hapkido club - so now classes for the Glebe Dojang will be on Mon and Wed nights. Monday nights are much better for the students and this should be a great boost to the club.

The Secrect Hapkido Class is back on every Fri night starting at 6:30pm supervised Daniel Marie. All students are encouraged to attend this special weekly training where they will be shown secret techniques - just kidding - but it sparked your interest didn't it?? The class is open to all grades - but is not suitable for absolute beginners.

Did you know that the Glebe Dojang is a short 10-15 min bus ride from the city - just catch a bus anywhere along George St going South and get off at Victoria Park near Sydney Uni - the gym is 3 min from there. For anyone working in the city or in the inner suburbs - the Glebe Dojang is easy to get to by public transport and there is plenty of off-street parking.

News Item: Master Song's Sword Workshop

AnnouncementsLast Sunday 16 Mar 08 Master B K Song provided a workshop to Hapkido students for the Australian Hapkido Association. Of particular interest were the three sword patterns that Master Song originally taught to us way back in 1987. We managed to record Master Song doing these three sword patterns so we now have a great resource for 1st Dans to learn the patterns properly. Our students also witnessed a great demonstration of Komdo sparring in the full gear and Master Song demonstrated some cutting of straw mats. At the end students asked lots of questions about Komdo. Many thanks to Master Song and his assistant Dwight Park for their time and knowledge.

News Item: Black Belt Classes in 2008

Black Belt TrainingThis year Black Belt Classes in Sydney will be held on the first Sunday of every month at 3:30 pm at Brookvale Dojang. If there are any changes they will be adivsed on the web site. All Black Belts who are actively training will be sent an email (as per the Black Belt Register) as a reminder of the training.

All Sydney Black Belts unable to attend must notify Master Brown prior to the training. Master Brown will be paying particular attention to Black Belts this year and keeping a close eye on your standards and approach to Hapkido.

For Black Belts who cannot attend on Sundays, Master Brown has a regular class every Saturday at Mona Vale - so if you cannot attend Sunday then you can still attend at least one Saturday per month with Master Brown.

Put these dates in your calendar - plan to be there - be organised - be consistent. Remember a Black Belt is not something you wear - it is something you are - you will need to work at it for the rest of your life.

News Item: Friendship visit to Master Ryoo's Hapkido club at Croydon

Club NewsOn Tuesday 8 Jan 07 a representative from the AHA visited Master Ryoo's Hapkido dojang in Croydon, Sydney. Last December, Grandmaster Matthew Sung Su Kim had requested that we visit Master Ryoo's dojang and get to know each other.

The gym is located at 146 Parramatta Rd, Croydon (opposite Office Works). The gym is very well equipped (see photos below) with a lounge for students, a weight training area and a large dojang with heaps of weapons neatly arranged on rack and one whole wall of mirrors. The reception looks professional.

The class was very well run with a good aerobic warm up led by Giorgio including pliometrics and group exercises to really get the body hot. This was followed by danjun exercises and stretching led by Master Yoo. Then the students broke off into groups for their syllabus work (each student had their own clipboard to record their progress and make notes relating to their own techniques).

Everyone in the class trained hard and their kyups were full of spirit and enthusiasm. Master Ryoo, Master Kim (his assistant) and the senior students have really created a great training atmosphere where the students feel challenged both physically and mentally. There was an obvious comradery in the class that would make any new student feel very welcome. The techniques they practised and training methods were very similar to the AHA techniques. In summary a good club, with good teachers and good students.
