Welcome to the Australian Hapkido Association

News Item: Feedback from the recent Byron Bay Instructor Course

Black Belt Training
This message was received yesterday - well done Master Geister!!

This is just a thank you to the Australian Hapkido Association and Master Matt Geister for the great class structure that was put together in relation to the Instructors Course in Byron Bay on 04-05/05/13.

The fact that Master Geister was able to teach the colour belt syllabus and then incorporate the black belt syllabus into the weekend was awesome. I know that I enjoyed it very much and took a lot out of the weekend.

For me, it demonstrated that I'm not far off the mark when I'm teaching/instructing Hapkido, if anything; the weekend displayed the technical ability that everyone is striving for in Hapkido, with Master Geister epitomising this in his teaching/instruction.

A special mention goes to Justine Lobb (for the “behind the scenes” work that she does in ensuring that the weekend went off without a “glitch”), Eli Dutton (for allowing the weekend to be held in his “awesome” dojang).

To the many senior black belts and black-tips who attended the weekend and who also provided positive feedback on the weekend’s program/structure, the weekend was made possible because of your commitment and dedication to the Association and to the art of Hapkido.

It is hoped that future Instructor Courses will incorporate the 1st to 4th Degree syllabus.

Again, thank you to Master Geister and to the organisers of the weekend.

Yours in Hapkido

Tup Moekaa

AHA Student Handbook - Sixth Edition is now available

Announcements
Many, many years ago we used to issue a Student Handbook when students joined - some of you may even remember the blue and before that, the black handbooks!!

Well depsite the advent of modern on-line platforms like Facebook and Youtube, we have received many requests from students wanting to actually have a document they can read. Hapkido has a rich history, many concepts and principles that are quite involved and cannot be conveyed in a quick 2 minute video or in Twitter window.

The Student Handbook has also been updated to reflect where we are now and to explain to students how we got here.

Some clubs will also have a club-specific version of this handbook which will include local information and history. Ask your instructor.

The AHA Student Handbook available here is a generic version. Here is a summary of the contents:
  • Introduction to Hapkido
  • Choosing a martial art
  • Comparison of Hapkido to other martial arts
  • What does “Hapkido” mean?
  • Philosophy of Hapkido
  • Techniques of Hapkido
  • Goals of Hapkido training
  • Training Attitude
  • Membership Oath
  • Danjun Exercises
  • Method of Danjun
  • Elements of Risk
  • Etiquette
  • Explanation of Belt Rankings
  • Glossary of Korean Terms
  • Summary of what you will learn
  • History of Hapkido
  • Founders of modern Hapkido
  • History of Hapkido in Australia
  • Connections to Korea
Click on the image below to download the AHA Student Handbook (in PDF format) - enjoy.

NOTE: We have disabled printing on this publicly available PDF file.

The reason for this is to encourage you to obtain printed copies from your instructor.

Please ask your instructor if they have hard copies available.

If they don't have any - ask them to get organised and get some printed!!

Instructors have been given access to a printable PDF version of this document.

News Item: Who is going for their next degree in 2013? - it's a team effort!!

Gradings
The following people have registered their intention to attempt to grade for their next Black Belt Degree in 2013. The journey of a black belt can be quite lonely and there is a long way between goals. So if one of these people is in your club then why not take an interest in their progress, Ask them how they are preparing, maybe even offer your time and encouragement to help them prepare.

It takes the whole club to make a good black belt - not just the instructor and the student - so don't just sit back and watch - be part of their success.

Aiming for 2nd Degree in 2013
  • Andrew Dunn - Brookvale
  • Christopher Kastelan - Central Coast
  • Dylan Tomlin - Brookvale
  • Gana Muniandy - Glebe
  • Janine Price - Sutherland
  • Justine Lobb - Pittwater
  • Matthew Dunne - Castle Hill
  • Miguel Mesiti - Bondi
  • Ross Hague - Murwillumbah
  • Russel Grierson - Castle Hill
  • Shane Cutland - Central Coast
  • Stuart Campbell - Castle Hill
  • Troy Price - Sutherland
Aiming for 3rd Degree in 2013
  • Gavin Mansfield - Brookvale
  • Kenny Foo - Sutherland
  • Sam Morgan - Sutherland
Aiming for 4th Degree in 2013
  • Daniel Turner - Bondi
  • Mark Bergquist - Tyalgum/Mooball
Minimum Time between gradings for Black Belts

Black belt techniques are usually more difficult than the coloured belt techniques and require a lot of time to get right. The following times are guidelines only and indicate how much time is normally taken to learn and perfect the techniques of each grade. It is common for black belts to take 10 years or longer to achieve their 4th Degree Black Belt.
  • 1st Degree to 2nd Degree – 2 years of training
  • 2nd Degree to 3rd Degree – 3 years of training
  • 3rd Degree to 4th Degree – 4 years of training
  • 4th Degree to 5th Degree - 5 years of training, etc...
Good luck to all pre-graders - train hard - fight easy!!
