New batch of Level 1 Instructors Graduated in Sep 2008

SyllabusIn September 2008 the AHA delivered the Instructor Course to 35 participants - for some of them this was the first one they attended. We have been delivering instructor courses since 1992 and have put 111 instructors through Level Certification in this time - with many having gone through several times. The accreditation is only valid for 3 years and must be accompanied by a valid First Aid Certificate.

A course was run on Norfolk Island as well by Tup Moekaa and Master Brown will be running the course in Northern NSW in Nov 08. This course is aimed at keeping all our instructors up to date with the latest techniques and concentrates on how to teach Hapkido safely to minimise injury to all.

The photo below is from the session at Brookvale - there were also sessions at Tuggerah and Norfolk Island. Click on Read More below to see the list of who went through the course.

News Item: Senior AHA Instructor to visit Norfolk Island Dojang

Club NewsHunter Hapkido Instructor Tupuna Moekaa is spending a week in Norfolk Island from Sat 27 Sep 2008 to Sat 4th Oct 2008. The flight is being sponsored by the AHA for the benefit of our members in Norfolk Island. Tup is also generously giving a week of his valuable time to pass on his extensive Hapkido knowledge and techniques.

The Hapkido club in Norfolk Island has been going for a long time - originally set up by Boyd Adams - is run by John Christian and Harvey McCoy. John was a student of Master Kevin Brown. They have a solid core of regular students and some very talented youngsters in their club. Being isolated it is difficult for them to keep up with changes in syllabus, etc. But they do take their training seriously.

Is Norfolk Island ready to meet Tup??

Tup will be providing seminars, a grading, an instructor course and participating in regular classes. He will also be experiencing island life and Norfolk Island hospitality. Standby for photos and a story when Tup returns.

Here is a map showing where Norfolk Island is located:

News Item: Melbourne Hapkido Club no more!!

AnnouncementsVincent Bacon - instructor of the Melbourne Hapkido Centre has announced the closure of his Hapkido classes in Melbourne. Unfortunately numbers were too low and the classes were not commercially viable.

It is unfortunate that Melbourne now joins the ranks of cities that used to have an AHA dojang and we wish Vincent the best of luck for his continued training and growth in martial arts.

News Item: Referee Training for Tournament

AnnouncementsRon Rees - the organiser of this year's annual Hapkido Tournament has arranged referee and judge training for the following dates:

- Saturday September 20 from 2 till 5 at the Tuggerah Dojang.

- Sunday 19 October at the Brookvale Dojang.

In order to ensure the tournament is well run and fair to all competitors - referees and judges for all events need to know what they are doing.

All black belts have a responsibility to help the association by being a referee and judge at our tournaments. This is your chance to give something back to the association and to the students in your club. It also help you train your club members so they have a chance of getting good results by knowing the rules and how the competition is judged.

Could all black belts please make an effort to ensure they attend the training this year. Only accredited black belts will be allowed to be referees and judges and this also forms part of your instructor accreditation. Just be there!!

Certificates will provided to those who attend.

News Item: Music for your Poong Yu Gwan pattern

SyllabusIf you are learning the Poong Yu Gwan pattern (Red Tips) or if you like doing it with music then you can now download the song that we usually play with this pattern.

Having music will help you keep the correct rythm, you will also find it more fun and more relaxing. Click on any image below to download the MP3 file.

This song was provided to the AHA in 1995 by Professor Huh Il Won from the Myung Ji University in Yong-In, South Korea. Do not expect hi-fidelity sound - it is a bit crackly - but that adds to the atmosphere!!

News Item: Black Belt Syllabus V3 is now available

SyllabusThe Black Belt Syllabus is now available on the web site. Up to now our focus has been on the coloured belts - ignoring the need for Black Belts to have clear information regarding what they are supposed to be working on. This Black Belt Syllabus addresses this neglect and sets down the requirements for each grade from 1st Degree to 4th degree.

The article "Now that you have that Black Belt" also explains what is expected of our Black Belts and makes for interesting reading for any Hapkido student - not just Black Belts.

To download a PDF version of the Black Belt Syllabus V3 click on the image below (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader):

To access the Black Belt Syllabus V3 via the web site click on the following button (it is the same button as the one at the top of this web page).

This will take you to the Syllabus page where you can access the syllabus for each belt by clicking on the icon.

Over the next few months we will add videos and images to the syllabus to help Black Belts understand what they need to be working on. This will be especially useful for our more remote clubs.

This Syllabus will be reviewed and revised over the next few months so please do not hesitate to provide feedback and suggestions via the Discussion Forum.
